Pauline Bartholomew, grower of prize-winning show plants and experienced show judge, wrote and illustrated the first Growing To Show in 1985.  Since then it has been reprinted several times, with only minor additions.  In 2003 Pauline gave AVSA all rights to this book, and we have done our best to preserve her wisdom and guidance as we bring Growing to Show up to date.  Pauline’s illustrated “how-to” steps and detailed writing cover every aspect of culture.  Much of the original text has not changed, but new research and new products have added to our knowledge and we have added information on blossom and foliage types,
water quality and watering methods, pH testing, pesticides, light options,
saintpaulia species, the new taxonomy, and growing and showing miniatures and semiminiatures.
Note to beginning growers:  Welcome!  This book is for you, too.  Although the title is Growing To Show, it is an excellent resource for everyone who loves African violets and wishes to nurture them to their prime condition including experienced growers who have grown and shown award-winning African violets for many years. Texas residents: add 8.25% sales tax.  Overseas shipping: add $7.50.
This book will be released at the 2008 AVSA Convention in
Tulsa, OK, shipping will be after the 2008 convention, or after June 15, 2008.

Other Books for Hobby Growers

African Violets

Tony Clements, David & Charles UK, 1992
This book is a wonderful reference on growing and propagating African violets.  African Violets is written for the beginner who wants to learn to grow violets, but also has sections on propagating from a leaf (which is easy), to crossing two plants to produce seed.  A great book to learn almost everything about growing African violets.

Growing African Violets and Some Other Flowering Houseplants ~ 'Out of Print' Ordering only!

Ruth Coulson, Kangaroo Press, 1993
Loaded with excellent culture basics and even a little violet history, Coulson’s book has gorgeous color pictures of African violets and gesneriads. Numerous black and white photos illustrate techniques such as rejuvenating old violets and separating plantlets. Of special interest is a section devoted to Australian gesneriads. For those just beginning to collect Australian hybrids such as ‘Colonial Whyte Yarcowie,’ the author lists her favorite violet performers by color and growth habit.

African Violets: Gifts from Nature

Melvin Robey, Cornwall Books, 1988
Robey’s book could be the textbook for "African Violets 101" at your local college. An easy read for novices on the subject of basic gesneriad culture, this book is a challenging read for even veteran growers on the subjects of fertilizer chemistry, growing under artificial light, pesticide use, and hybridizing. The author credits AVSA and AGGS, as well as some very well-known names in the gesneriad world, as sources for much of his information and many of his beautiful color photographs. This volume incorporates and expands upon his previous book, African Violets: Queens of the Indoor Gardening Kingdom (1980).
